Basking in the success of their recent debut long player, My Favorite Robot AKA Jared Simms and Voytek Korab unleash a remix album graced by the great and the good of Canada’s burgeoning electronic music scene.
The eponymously titled label has, in just a year, become a major force to be reckoned with, releasing a string of single that have seen support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Stacey Pullen, Jori Hulkonnen, Lee Burridge, Matthew B, Thomas Schumacher to name but a few. Now as 2009 heads into its final quarter the MFR crew have decided to draw on local talent to dissect the tracks behind ‘We Come in Pieces’ and create a showcase of great house, techno and electro.
The album opens with No.19 label boss Jonny White taking the controls and imprinting his own deep, dark and techy vibe upon ‘Ask Around’ to brilliant effect. From there it’s a short hop to Jordan Dare’s superb remix of ‘While My Guitar Gently Creeps’ which shows just why this Montreal producer is so well respected. VanderMeer’s take on the same original cut and spins it into a great piece of melodic tech house. Next up ‘Wasted Time’ gets the double remix treatment firstly from Rekid signing and Toronto hero James Teej who steps up to transform it into a bleepy and glitchy slice of chunky house, then by No.19’s Nitin who delivers something sublime and truly different. ‘Mexican Sunset (in a bad way)’ sees Rawthentic’s boss Carlo Lio go to town with a driving piece of bass driven excellence which is quickly followed by Pantone’s brilliant mix of ‘Modest Goddess’. The final triumvirate comes courtesy of Butter the Butcher, Kenny Glasgow and Article who provide three extremely varied and intensely engaging mixes that just leaving you wanting more as the album comes to a close.
Canada and Toronto in particular seems to be going through something of a musical renaissance at present with labels such as My Favorite Robot Records, No.19 Music, and Rawthentic leading the charge and with the kind of production talent on display for this album it is quite clear to see why. 2009 has been an incredible year for My Favorite Robot and one has to feel that as 2010 looms things are going to just keep getting better.
