Nightlight Music has been doling out fat slices of tech-house for almost 6 years. Along the way weʼve added a solid crew of core artists, some enthusiastic newcomers and some seasoned vets of the dance music world. We were lucky enough to connect with a very passionate young artist from Berlin named Sebastian Herre a short while ago. Our first collaboration was a free download EP on the 5 release Nightlight Music sub-label, NLMX. The 2008 release, titled “Raum & Rausch EP”, was a well-received sampling of Herreʼs more percussive tech-house works, a bit on the deeper side.
Beyond The Sky is another high quality release from our boy in Berlin. Sebastian really shines on this release, which we feel is his best work to date. Pensive moods, percussive grooves and nostalgic leads are the elements of the story here. Itʼs a classy, classic flight through clouds of minimalism, on a house music plane.
Jupiter works off of an atmospheric drone, adds an understated and effective bassline, and winds in and out of some nostalgic and mysterious melodic elements. All of this on top of the chunky percussion provide a superb substrate for huge house stabs that build the track to a wild party mood. The track doesnʼt stop evolving and the sounds are placed just right; this is the funkiest trip to Jupiter youʼve ever taken. Herreʼs attention to detail and subtlety really stands out here.
Kalisto is a continuation of Jupiterʼs theme, but with a more soulful flare. Taking a few of the elements from the former track, Herre adds dubby stabs that give a more melancholy tone to this work. A sexy and sleazy brass solo gels the track together, giving this pensive groover an organic, more human touch. This is deep and cerebral tech-house at itʼs finest, no clichés in site.
Control Theory picks up the pace and the fervor. Chunky drums, undulating synthwork, fat claps and alien bassoons make this a less gentle outer space flight than the first two cuts, but one stopping at a planet of pure party. Work this into your sets and watch the extraterrestrials dance their asses off.
[a]pendics shuffle has been producing the highest quality music for many years now, under many an alias. From his dark housey works as dubloner, his IDM and downtempo works as Eight Frozen Modules, to his new rock band project, Kenneth James Gibson has proven himself to be a pillar of electronic music in general. Heʼs a friend and inspiration, and his rework of Sebastianʼs Jupiter shows his talents in the greatest way. Incorporating jazz-fueled drumwork, wild, tweaked out leads, added vocal bits and a total twist on the bassline, [a]pendics.shuffle filters Jupiter through a bowl of West Coast techno funk for us. A truly amazing remix!
Finally, Vancouver-based veteran of all things tech house, the man whoʼs name has been synonymous with high quality, fat tech-house for many years, Jay Tripwire brings things down with classic dubbed out techno vibes. The mature approach shows Jayʼs history and ability to lay down the moods like no Canadian can. We love the dub influence here, and welcome such an inspirational character to our cast.
