This latest release from
the impressive My Favorite Robot Records label sees a compilation of 5 tracks
from 5 of the imprint’s core artists. Back at the beginning of 2009 we saw the
release of ‘Stimulus Parts 1,2 & 3’ which saw great support from the likes
of Stacey Pullen, Jori Hulkonnen, Laurent Garnier etc, now we get a fourth
chapter in the series supplying a new set of outstanding tracks from MFR’s
great and good.
First up we have the
awesome James Teej an artist who has been riding a wave over the recent months
and looks forward to the imminent release of his debut album on Matt Edwards
Rekids label. Here Teej provides the wondrous ‘Onwards Upside’ a journey into
deep slo-mo house with a truly classic old school vibe to it. Rich pads and
warm analogue bass are swept along with the superb heavily effected vocals and
tied together by a simple rhythm track and sublime percussive elements, true
class, through and through.
Second of the five comes
from No.19 Music co-owner and production hot shot Nitin. ‘Siroc’ picks up the
tempo and drives things into the realms of solid techy house with a driving rhythm
section and hypnotically repetitive synth lines. This cut has a wonderful dark
spacey edge to it drawing you deep and deep down the rabbit hole with every bar
and is a further testament to Nitin’s skills as a producer.
Next up we have the short
but sweet ‘Your Grandma busts a Windmill’ from the excellent Vandermeer. This
is a brilliant slice of intense bass heavy electro with a full on mesh of
percussive, melodic and electronic elements all vying for your attention. It
comes in at under 4 minutes in length but in every other way this is a
heavyweight track and a definite highlight of the EP.
Penultimate cut ‘The
Future Will Judge Us’ comes from the My Favorite Robot duo who deliver a
delicious concoction of warm bubblin bass, swirling sythns and heartfelt
ethereal vocals. This is another display of why Jared and Voytek and so well
respected with electronic music fans everywhere, effortlessly bringing a
musicality to an intense and electronic sound and making something uniquely
theirs.
Finally we have much
lauded Kenny Glasgow who turns in the entrancing ‘Open Your Mind’, a track that
comes on like the bastard child of Harold Faltermeyer and the Human League.
There is a loose connection to house music here but the recording transcends
any simple genre classification providing a rich tapestry of sound that evokes
the films scores of the 70’s and 80’s. Pure brilliance.
The My Favorite Robot
label is becoming a truly pioneering outlet, mixing elements of electro, house,
nu-disco, techno, electronica and more and providing music of startling
quality, long may it last...
