Mental Overdrive’s ”Elephantastic” was initially put up for sale in one (1) copy on eBay, as the first release in our ”Exclusive Music” series. Because of the very experimental nature of this series (it’s based on direct auctioning of the master recordings through eBay), things did not turn out exactly as predicted. When the reserve price we were asking weren’t met, it was decided that re-offering the item on eBay would be an act of cowardice, thus leaving us with the option of destroying the master in a very violent and myth-inducing fashion, or simply release it in a more traditional way as a digital single before continuing our eBay series later on. We decided on the latter. ”Elephantastic!” finds Michael Jackson and The Residents taking a joy-ride with the Clangers through Ghost Town with a skankin’ brass section echoing from a basement club nearby. Rune Lindbaek gives the master tapes a slight re-shuffle in his ”RL multitrack edit” - to great effect. This is what iDJ said about ”Elephantastic!” in their ”Electro/New Wave” column when the first promos left our HQ back in May 2007: ”This is a queer fish and no mistake. And – quelle surprise – it’s Scandinavian! Massive racial stereotyping aside. ”Elephantastic!” is exactly like it sounds – an analogue nu-disco head-nodder with strange sci-fi synth-stabs and a clumsy, bottom-heavy wobble to it. If Prins Thomas had a dream about cartoon sea lions in 1974 after getting a bit too friendly with the brown acid it still wouldn’t sound as charmingly bonkers as this.
