Parisian Phil Weeks takes things back to a simple, soulful, raw house sound for his second artist album ‘Love Affair’. Right from the off Phil sets the bar high with the slow building and intense intro of the first track ‘Slow Dance (U Cry)’, swirling synths increase under heavy drum stabs and a building vocal sample -- it gets you hooked right away. The rest of the album flows like he’s rolled up some fine Mary Jane with the ashes of the late great Marvin Gaye, it’s got a wholesome soulful and deep vibe throughout. From the swing intro and deep funk of ‘In The Mood’, the rolling’ bassline of ‘Pimpnosis’ and the currently released and very hot single ‘All Day Every Day’, everything works, not only as individual tracks aimed at the floor, but also as a coherent piece of work, an album that can be sat down and listened to throughout. The great thing about this album is that it’s not trying to be something it’s not, Phil’s great at producing dancefloor friendly, head nodding, 4/4 house music, so that’s what he does (minus the broken beat, spoken word track ‘Mind Game’, but I’ll forgive him for that one). It’s testament to him that in this current climate what Phil’s Robsoul Recordings is still pushing out a relentless schedule of fantastic house music.
