The last year has been an eventful one for Anja. Her label mobilee cruised into its third year with a string of records that regularly shot to the top of the charts—and the front of the crates—of the world's best DJs. As “minimal" gave way to a warmer, suppler sound, mobilee was at the forefront of the shift, with a sound at once dark and sensual, moody and uplifting. Sebo K's Back Up Vol. 01 kicked off mobilee's new mix-CD series, while Pan-Pot's Pan-O-Rama, the label's first artist album, established mobilee as a source for masterful longplayers. Touring ceaselessly, Anja traveled the globe, bringing the mobilee vibe to clubbers around the world; soaking up inspiration for new music everywhere she set down. Now she invites us to travel with her to an unfamiliar setting Beyond the Valley. Co-produced with Paul Brtschitsch - with whom she collaborated on the stunning single ‘Loop de Mer’/’Belize’ - Beyond the Valley is more than a collection of tracks. It's a rich, nuanced statement from an artist ready to open up a new world for listeners. It's the sound of the musician stepping up her game. Anja's imaginary stomping ground is an enchanted place where the old rules no longer apply—an unfamiliar landscape full of tantalizing scents and shadowy hollows. Anything could happen, and to make sense of it, you'll have to trust all your senses. Titles like ‘Safari’ and ‘Belize’ suggest exoticism, but it goes beyond that: the record harnesses the spooky unknowing of the Brothers Grimm, Pan's Labyrinth, Little Red Riding Hood… "It's the place where your parents told you not to go play as a child," says Anja. "Why? Because anything could happen. It's dangerous and anarchic. All the creatures that have been chased out of the village have gone there to hide." It sounds not unlike what we modern, city-dwelling mortals know as nightlife, a scene we recreate every weekend, with subwoofers instead of tunneling burrows, and waving arms instead of the branches of spirit trees. That's just the sort of environment where Anja and her fellow revelers thrive. Anja brings that pagan spirit to life in 10 inky, supple cuts. The lead single ‘Mole’ (to appear on 12" backed with a remix from Pan-Pot) sets the tone with tribal drums and snaky reverb trails. Guiros croak like frogs, and flashes of melody dart away like salamanders. Just as our parents also told us never to turn our back on the ocean, Beyond the Valley proceeds with caution, always respectful of the strangeness before it: ‘Get Away’ tiptoes into the shadows in the way that a good DJ teases her audience over to the other side… But, there's plenty of abandon here as well: check ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, with its urgent, cresting build-ups, or the starry-eyed submission of ‘Belize’, which stakes out a jungle clearing where dancers revel until dawn. The record's close, the bobbing ‘Fish at Night’, wraps up the album with a new musical direction for Anja, where dubby half-stepping meets bubbling chords in the weightlessness of the deep. The album's title track represents its spiritual heart, where suave timbres temper the unremitting tension, and electronic frequencies fuse with the music of the human voice. Creeping forward on animal paws, you'd have to call it "jungle music" if the name weren't already taken. What you make of it—a sophisticated form of primitivism, or an ascendance of the animal inside all of us—is up to you. That nether world is the heart of Beyond the Valley. And thanks to Anja, she's not only led us there by the hand, but she's brought back a piece of that other world to our own.

“Delicate production with precise attention paid to detail. Very nice to hear such a diverse record that goes everywhere from dance floor energy to mysterious deepness. This is also what makes this timeless and useful to play early, peak, late, or to listen to at home when returning from the club. Full Support!”

“ "What a great album, definately one of the highlights 2008! Great productions off all the tracks, love the well chosen bell and accoustic sounds besides the modern electronic fill in's, nice melodies and themes as well. Like the whole album, though my favourites here are "Little Red Riding Hood" (HIT!), "Safari", "Mole", "Beyond The Valley". 10/10"”

DJ TIMES Review

“Beyond the Valley by Anja Schneider (Mobilee Records): Mobilee label-head Anja Schneider’s music lives were minimalism and sexiness meet and it’s a lovely place to be – full of acoustic percussion rhythms, world instrument samples, and beautifully haunting melodies. Being at the forefront of the Berlin scene, Anja seamlessly merges hip shaking and musical sophistication. Standouts include the random noise bursts of “Mole” and the melodic minimal of “Belize.” Not to be missed! – Robert LaFrance ”

Groove Mag (GER)

Mile”

IDJ Magazine - UK

“Mobilee continues its well-earned ascent with a second full-length release, courtesy of label boss Anja Schneider. While much of her imprint’s output has focused on the bleaker, after-after party end of minimal techno, Anja’s own work (produced in conjunction with Paul Brtschitsch) has always maintained a more organic appeal, thanks to judicious use of granular delays, distant melodic motifs and a cohesive, strangely wholesome vibe. A similar feel permeates the nine tracks on ‘Beyond The Valley’, which despite its continuously pulsing four-four kick, still delivers plenty of charm, even during its darkest moments. ‘Mole’ is a typically Anja-esque fusion of tribal pings and languid drums, ‘Maki’ casts rolling pianos and Detroit pads over a whirring, pared-down groove, and the lop-sided swing of ‘Get Away’ is as sexy as minimal gets, with its supple bass manoeuvres and slinky synths arranged in deeply tantalising combinations. Seductive without being saccharin, and edgy without becoming aggressive, it’s one of this year’s undoubted techno triumphs.”

KIKI (Bpitch Control)

“Habe schon fast jeden track im club gespielt! für jeden situation gibt´s einen anderen favorit, wobei “maki” & “cascabel” schon ganz vorne sind!”

Pär Grindvik

Ripperton (Perspectiv)

“I played both tracks last saturday and well... firestarter! Should be one of the "album" of the year!”

Simon Baker (Infant, 20:20 Vision)

“Thanks for Anja album, its good. My fave from the 5 album tracks you sent me is "Beyond The Valley"....no question. Love the deepness and spooky vibes. Will play. Its late night heads down action !!! nicey nice !!”

URB Mag (USA)

“With Minimal’s popularity starting to wane Anja Schneider and her Mobilee label have been blazing a trail to ‘what’s next’ with new and exciting sounds. Beyond The Valley is Schneider’s first artist album and the label’s second, more than just a collection of tracks this is a proper album that tells a story from start to finish. From the first bouncy notes of the aptly named Safari with it’s lush jungle-like feel through to the almost dub-step final track Fish at Night Anja lays all her influences bare demonstrating she’s always open to new forms. The music pulls the listener into Anja’s strange and wonderful world, as she describes it: “…the place where your parents told you not to...play as a child.” Favorite cuts include the Detroit string laden Maki and the quirky Little Red Riding Hood, but it’s the title track with its monster kick drum, spooky noises and eerie vocals which truly stands out and transports us to another place. - Mark S. Krüx”
