Geographically speaking, Tokyoʻs Ryo Murakami in a long way from the Berlin based Poker Flat andDessous label imprints, however sonically speaking itʼs an entirely different matter. His crisp, detailed,hi-tech sound fits perfectly with the two labelsʻ ethos; he produces cutting edge, playful and deeplydanceable electronic road-trips! His dancefloor instincts were hung up on show to the world with the ‚Rise EPʻ on Dessous in 2007, the title track having been featured on the Dessous Compilation ʻBest Kept Secrets.ʼ Alongside this, his delicious slow burning warehouse track ‚My Soulʻ - an exclusive track for the compilation – was showcased on Steve Bugʻs ‚Fabric 37ʻ mix, gaining so much praise that Poker Flatʻs Cle chose two more exclusive tracks to feature on his mix for the recent‚Dead Manʻs Handʻ compilation. A strong start for the new producer indeed, and on that note, Ryoʼs debut 12” for Poker Flat will hit the clubs very soon, featuring two brand new razor sharp productions;‚Down The Skyʻ and the curiously titled, ‚Coke.ʻ Accompanying his original tracks is also a tantalising remix of ‚...Skyʻ by our Greek boy-wonder Argy... making a super-hot package!
Itʻs clear to see how the Japanese Dj, Producer and Live Act has been influenced by a spectrum of musicstyles, from techno to disco to rock, from dub to experimental Electronica and beyond. Inspiredand enlightened by this wide range of aural stimuli, Ryoʻs first journeys into production were madepossible by the discovery of a few pieces of analogue equipment, namely an old synthesiser and a drum machine. You could argue it is his undying appreciation for these warm, earthy instruments that translates so well into his current blend of stripped down tech-house.
Having already released a handful of incredibly strong records, notably his stunning techy ride,ʻThe Lizardʼ on Damian Lazarusʼ RebelOne Series, Ryoʼs production talents have not gone unnoticed internationally. In 2006 he released his debut EP on the Japanese imprint Kawaya Sounds, and also released Eps on the growing Asian Dynasty label, the most recent of which has shown us the most experimental depths of the producerʼs sound. Ryo is also strongly involved in the Asian music scene. He can be found regularly making appearances in some of Japanʼs most important clubs like Tokyoʼs ʻColours Studio.ʼ These performance continue tobuild his name and as a consequence have solidified his place within his homelandʼs vast and competitive music scene.
Murakami is now making a name for himself with his tense and atmospheric Live show, which takesthe audience on a real inter-sound voyage through his recent productions for Poker Flat and Dessous, alongside new and sometimes improvised material...! Now more touring, new releases and oversees gigs beckon, and Ryoʻs stark and addictive contrast between analogue historics and futuristic grooves has spread far further than he first might have imagined!
Keep a close eye on this talented new member of our family!
