Back in the days, Mijk van Dijk recorded some of the first techno records that came out of Berlin right at the beginning of the 1990s and helped to pave the way for electronic music as a journalist, producer and DJ. He has been producing some of the hardest and fastest techno tunes ever with DJ Tanith, been a pioneer for a new sound called "Trance" back in 1992 and wrote tunes like Marmion’s „Schoeneberg“ and Microglobe’s „High On Hope“, „Environ-mentality“ and „All Our Colours“, that became Techno classics. In short: he is a german Techno legend. The Microglobe album "Afreuropamericasiaustralica" has been rereleased few days ago. Here is his selection for "3 Things People Play"
These "3 Things People Play" from me may come to some as some surprise, but my first love was the Funk and there is just so much great Funk and Boogie around these days. It's the freshest style and I am involved in that a bit myself with my project "The Chaenge" with Florian Schirmacher and my new project "mijkfunk".
But enough chit-chat now, here we go.
Jimmy Edgar "XXX" [!K7]
This is my favourite album these days. A perfect blueprint for NuFunk: fresh and raw and a well of hits.
NuFunk is still a young galaxy, nurishing itself from a glorious and somehow forgotten 80s past and the experience of 20 years of House & Techno.
It's amazing how Jimmy Edgar defines his sound in such a unique way. Already a classic.
Also check "Hush", his great single on Glasstable 001.
Azari & III "Reckless With Your Love" (Tensnake-Remix) [Permanent Vacation]
Anticipating every new Tensnake release, this remix is an odor mark of a daring artist pushing ever forward.
All you guys and girls who expected a second Coma Cat or Dog, beware: Marco Niemerski arrived in the 90s now.
C&C Music Factory clashes with Soul II Soul, agogo bells and an indisputably trademark boogie bassline, taking the great original to a new level.
Can't wait to drop this while it's hot, coz very soon everybody and their mother will be playing this hit!
Kidkanevil "Black Bug/ When I Dig" [First Word Records]
I just love that groove of "Black Bug". It's a perfect mix of Funk, stoopid R&B and tribal Fun Boy Three.
And Taprikk Sweezee's extra-ordinary voice is haunting me since Michael Fakesch's "Dos"-Album.
Not to forget "When I Dig", although this is probably too R&B for some.
To me however it sounds like Nicolette's little sister on a summer vibe. Sweetness.
