How we did it: Part 20 - Fabrice Lig

Studio Talk with Fabrice Lig about 'Genesis Of A Deep Sound'

-
Born about fifty km from Brussels, in the city of Charleroi, Fabrice Ligny used to be a History and Geography teacher, but the music brought him to the forefront of the electronic scene of his country since his early artistic steps. From the Break Dance era when he was still a teenager to the raise of the House scene of Chicago, the alternative electronic scene from Europe and the Techno from Detroit, Fabrice absorbed very rich elements. Fabrice Lig's production career included releases on very conceptual labels such as Kevin Saunderson's KMS, Laurent Garnier's F Communications, and also Raygun Records, 7th City, Kanzleramt, Motech, Delsin, and more recently Third Ear Recordings and Versatile Records. Fabrice's new album "Genesis Of A Deep Sound" is out on Fine Art Recordings. Here is How He Did It:

Back To Sweet Home: I made that track few years ago when I came back from an Australian tour. I stayed 2 weeks 20.000 kilometers from home, my kids, my wife. Was strange as I really felt the distance between us. I loved Australia, its probably one of the most beautiful country on the planet, but in the other way, you really feel your far away from Europe. So when I came back at home, I tried to translate my feelings into music. So it was a mix between the sadness to be far away from home and the joy to come back and see my family. I wanted to make a special beats, unusual like the unusual feeling I got during my tour in Aussie. I used an old simmons analog rhythm machine, a self made modular synth (to make the bass), my warm synthex synth, tweek everything and finaly “Back to sweet home” was made…Some people told me it sounds like a Carl Craig track, wasn’t the purpose, but maybe Carl Craig had the same feeling I had when he travelled far away from his sweet home ;-)

Japanese Soul: After the “Even deeper” track on 7th City, Titonton and I wanted to make some other track into that same vein. He came back to Belgium and we worked on 2 new tracks. Its always a special moment to work with Titonton because he is a really special and unique artist. He is totally into his music, he lives it, and into the studio it makes some special and soulful moments. It was a pleasure for me to share our inspiration. And to see Titonton playing on the keyboard some great and soulful chords is an inspiring thing for me ! Than we recorded “Japanese Soul”. That title came later when I toured in Japan. I played that track for the first time in Tokyo (Air Club), it was the first track of the live act, and something special happened. The track is funky, soulful but it was not a typical dancefloor bomb, but when the track starded, the chords played…All the people went crazy, I had the feeling these track was made for that Japanese audience, they totally understood the soul of that track, it was a really rare moment I will never forget. Than I showed the video of that live to Titonton, and we decided to call it “Japanese Soul”. Titonton and I love japan a lot…Japanese people told us really often they feel something Japanese into our music ??? Maybe we are soul brother with these people…

The video of that live act:

Energy Machine: Kraftwerk was one of my first contacts with electronic music. My father liked it, so I had some records at home. At this time, for me, it was just another pop band like the others I was listening. Its just some years later than I realised what it was. So it was a huge fun for me to make a “Kraft work”, but I really wanted to put some of my elements into that track, to be sure it doesn’t sound like a stupid copy, so I putted a Roland Sh 101 bassline, some TR 909 drum sounds. Of course it will never be as good as a real Kraftwer track, it was not the purpose, but I think the people will feel the joy I had to make it, I’m sure.

Finaly, I just invite you to check the great video teaser my friends from Lapino albino did for the album:
