Joining Sigfússon (whose unassisted musings are now released via his Sin Fang Bous moniker which just made the American Rolling Stone call him the âIcelandic Beckâ) are Gudbjörg Hlin Gudmundsdottir, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, Halldór Ragnarsson, Ãrn Ingi Ãgústsson, Kjartan Bragi Bjarnason and Sóley Stefánsdóttir - all working in a wide range of solo-, band- (Kimono, Skakkamanage) and visual arts-projects in their own right. For their second full length LP, We Built A Fire, all members of the band had equal input in the writing process, thereby creating Seabear's first real collective album. While Sigfússon's unmistakable voice remains the centerpiece on We Built A Fire, the new joint approach is reflected in songs like "I build you a fire" where the whole band joins in on vocals. While retaining their signature simplistic and addictive naive indie folk ("Wooden Teeth", âLion Face Boyâ), the band have branched out stylistically to include elements of straight up indie rock ("Softship"), intense balladry ("Cold Summer") and even some country twang ("Leafmask"). There is something instantly familiar about Seabear's songs that resonates with fans and critics alike. Despite scant promotion and airplay behind their debut album release, 2007's The Ghost That Carried Us Away, their songs and animated videos were a social media hit generating millions of plays. It's a very Icelandic DIY setup - their music is recorded by the band in their basement studio with its apple carton covered walls. All artwork and videos are hand made by Sindri's partner and band mate Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir. http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21386 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21386 Fri, 05 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Choir of young Believers - Claustrophobia - Ghostly International (GI98) The third single from Choir of Young Believersâ debut full-length This Is for the White in Your Eyes is a relatively minimal endeavor from the notoriously maximalist Danish collectiveâbut when it comes to the Choir, big things usually come in small packages. Plus two of Choir of Young Believersâ contemporaries in moody, experimental pop offer their takes on two of Jannisâ songs: Peter Silberman of The Antlers turns âClaustrophobiaâ into a genuinely claustrophobic affair, sucking the air out of the room and injecting a swarm of bitcrushed digital effects and throbbing, caustic atmosphere; and Sian Alice Group turns White in Your Eyes standout âWintertime Loveâ into a slow-burning tribal forest ritual, circling the songâs chanted title until the sun comes up. http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20616 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20616 Fri, 05 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Alex Dimou - One Of Us One Of Them - Klik Records (KLCD058) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21208 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21208 Fri, 05 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Info - We Choose The Moon - Klik Records (KLCD056) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21212 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21212 Fri, 05 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Enabl.ed - Drik Relmkis2 EP - Oeuvre (CLA002) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21063 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/21063 Wed, 03 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Madteo - Sinister Ministers - Meakusma Records (mea002x) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20456 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20456 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Andrew Thomas - Between Buildings And Trees - Kompakt (KOMPAKTCD79) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20695 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20695 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 October - Muscle Memory EP - caravan (CVAN011) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20433 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20433 Sun, 28 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Grasscut - Muppet - Ninja Tune (ZENDNLS244) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19835 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19835 Fri, 26 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 School of Zuversicht - Randnotizen from idiot town - Pingipung (PP17) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20778 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20778 Fri, 26 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Demdike Stare - Symbiosis - Modern Love (Love059) *Long awaited CD album collecting both limited vinyl editions from Demdike Stare, fusing elements of everything from fragmented dub to Turkish, Iranian and West Indian library records, through to Scandinavian drone, Chicago House and beyond..." Demdike Stare is a long-in-the-making hookup between two shady characters operating at the fringes of Manchester's fragmented music scene: Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty. Miles has been a longtime affiliate of Modern Love as one half of Pendle Coven and under his own MLZ alias, while Canty is one of the city's most recognisable vinyl collectors, carrying an obsession with everything from obscure Nordic Doom records to Anatolyan funk albums, fuelled by his dayjob helping out at the Finders Keepers label. The project is named after Pendle's most famous witch: Elizabeth Southerns, aka Demdike. The tracks on 'Symbiosis' are drawn from elements of Turkish, Indian, Iranian, African and West Indian film soundtracks alongside Norwegian drone records, classic House templates, punctured dub, modified techno and the arctic noise perfected by Mika Vainio. Original sources and dense analogue experiments weave around eachother with little care for convention or stylistic expectation, instead throwing the pair's extensive musical knowledge into a set of tracks that, quite brilliantly, defy categorisation. The album opens with 'Suspicious Drone', a dense 6 minute opening that chugs a long like a malfunctioning mechanical beast, honing in on Lancashire's dark industrial landscapes before moving onto more exotic, balmy territory. 'Haxan Dub' (named after the film narrated by william burroughs about witchcraft) deploys fragmented dub echoes infused with displaced horns and African signatures, taking its time with one of the jerkiest rhythms you'll have the pleasure of hearing, before 'Jannisary' tangles in and out of an Iranian hook and a squashed Congolese rhythm that creates an asymmetric, geniusly constructed dancefloor killer. By the time the album comes to a close with 'Ghostly Hardware' an hour later, the cycle is complete with a return to icy tundras and chugging machinations steeped in the traditions of Scandinavian machine music and pure analogue frequencies, expertly handled by those masterful technicians over at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering. One of the years standout debuts - and an essential purchase! http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20840 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20840 Fri, 26 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Four Tet - Love Cry - Domino Recording Co (RUG348D)   http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20691 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20691 Thu, 25 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 800beloved - Everything Purple (Single) - Moodgadget Records (MGT-063) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20314 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20314 Tue, 23 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Manaboo - Unhuh EP - steadfast (STEADFAST004) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19837 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19837 Mon, 22 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Architect - consume adapt create - Hymen Records (Y781) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20241 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20241 Mon, 22 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Mr. Chicago - Light Years - AvantRoots (ar008) Itâs difficult to describe Mr.Chicago music, long way travel, pure music, emotive. No wonder, then, that Osborne spawned a suite of remixes that rival the originalsâ unadulterated creative moxie. Osborne: The Ghostly Remixes opens with Bullionâs rerub of the appropriately titled âAfrika.â The UK producer replaces the trackâs mesh of African-percussion samples with a cocky electro-soul strut and an earworm of a basslineâthe results still reek of a psychedelic revolution, but its locale is decidedly American. Bogdan Raczynskiâs remix of âRulingâ is a real curveball, as the Rephlex acolyte turns the originalâs warm Chicago trappings into a cascade of cubist dots and lines, lowering the trackâs iconic vocal sample to a disturbing basso profundo. Werk Discsâ Lukid transforms âThereâ from a dreamy New Order nod into a buzzing, anxious slice of instrumental hip-hop. The digital version of The Ghostly Remixes includes Luke Vibertâs high-energy take on âOutta Sightâ and Arto Mwambeâs handclap-house edit of âWait a Minuteâ (a highlight from the Hovercrafting EP); the vinyl edition features an exclusive Lukid remix of the acid-washed âJunk Food,â here re-imagined as the soundtrack for a seedy robot dive bar.  http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19832 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19832 Fri, 19 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Rocket Empire - Rocket Empire - OM Records (Om-416)   http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19983 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19983 Tue, 16 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Snog - last of the great romantics - Hymen Records (Y780) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20172 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/20172 Tue, 16 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Vindicatrix - Die Alten Bösen Lieder - Mordant Music (MM038D) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19247 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19247 Mon, 15 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Christian Löffler - Raise EP - c.sides (CSIDES006) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19838 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19838 Mon, 15 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Various Artists - Audiovisual Couture Vol.1 by DJ koweSix - Conte De Conteur (CDC01D) Popbitch sent out a link the other day to a video from the Washington Post of Christopher Walken cooking chicken with pears. Nobodyâs tied to a chair, but you might as well be. This is one of those stunningly intimate scenes guaranteed to knock you off balance and ensnare your devout attention in one fell swoop. Which brings us to Mr Kowalskiâs kitchen. Away from the battlefield of the dancefloor, armour cast aside, DJ koweSix is a very different beast. Audiovisual Couture Volumes are a personal collection of musical reflections in two parts, ranging from the acoustic carresses of Elliot Smith to the silver screen splendour of The Cinematic Orchestra, from the husky tones of Husky Rescue to the subtle whispers of Aeroplane, not forgetting koweSixâs very own bespoke tailoring, bearing the Moonbootica insignia stitched to the inside pocket. Yet even the Moonbootica cuts here reveal them in conciliatory mood. Whilst Kowalski energized the denizens of darkened discotheques, a brilliant young couturier crossed his path in Hamburg - Silke Wilhelm, no stranger to mercurial risings herself. Self-styled urban couture designer Silke Wilhelm I. and cooler than thou koweSix teamed up to conceptualize her Paris Fashion Week show and, recognizing a zeitgeist spirit similar to her own, Silke sought his input as she turned her attention to creating the fragrances which would complement her garments. Stepping outside the comfort zone of his musical expertise, Kowe was not only instrumental in divining the actual composition of the fragrance for men, he also lent his visage to the public image campaign for Embrace, as the product was christened. Silke, meanwhile, graces the poster art for the female fragrance, Lucent. The designer and the DJ, heavenly scents and seductive sounds. An unconventional approach to alchemy, perhaps, but perfectly in tune with Silke Wilhelmâs creative philosophy: âI live, I observe and discover. It is a mood, a passion, a need that floats in the air and gives me the âkickâ. From then on, a film plays in my head... I grasp the emotion, I immerse myself in it completely.â Having served an apprenticeship under Vivienne Westwood, Silke Wilhelm was discovered as an emerging talent by MTV Designerama in 2003, the year she created the Silke Wilhem I brand. She has since taken part in the prestigious Milan and Paris fashion weeks. The Silke Wilhelm portfolio embraces fashion, perfume, music, vision & design, moving beyond the traditional linear confines of any one genre. These bold aspirations have now been distilled in two delectably packaged mix albums, representing audiovisual urban couture as defined by koweSix and Silke Wilhelm. Each one crafted in the image of the Eau de Parfum bearing its name. If SWâs first perfume, Lucent, radiates with perspicuity, then Embrace is inspired by the complex, yet ultimately harmonious, nature of koweSixâs art. Each of the CDs is presented in a sleek, state of the art, luxury box and comes with samples of the two fragrances, carefully folded into silk cloth and sealed to capture their essence. Lucent & Embrace Crystal clarity, close to the heart. Two mixed compilations, shaded light and dark, warm and cool, downbeat and upbeat, hopeful and melancholic, self-assured and fragile, contradictory and concatenated. An emotionally charged fairytale, where eclectic, electric currents flow through fragrance, fashion and music. During the 5 year period between 1999 and 2004, they'd meet up from time to time, hang out, drink a lot of coffee, smoke too many cigarettes, stay up all night and make some noise. The songs on Lost Foundling come from this very loose and irregular working period. Their initial plan was to come back to the tracks at some point, mix them and release them. However, they were both busy with other projects and when Andrea Parker expressed and interest in releasing the material on her newly established Aperture label, the duo discovered it was impossible to go back and meddle in their material. Mira and Mark had recorded their songs on an evolutionary range of formats, whatever was to hand, and when they went to dig out the computer files, dat tapes, floppy and zip drives, they were reminded that most of these had become obsolete, in what felt like a brief decade. There was no going back. The duo selected 13 of their favourite tracks, leaving them untouched. Lost Foundling captures a slice in time, a document of their discovery and experimentation as musicians, the songs have survived, uninhibited, tender and instinctive. Mark Clifford is a founder member of Seefeel. The band released their first album, Quique on Too Pure, followed by Succour and other EPs on Warp as well as (CH-Vox) on Rephlex. Mark worked closely with the Cocteau Twins, producing the 'Otherness' EP and has many remix and solo and collaborative projects under his belt. Having recently reformed, Seefeel are currently in the studio working on a new material and have been playing live. Mira Calix has released five albums and is signed to Warp Records. Her earlier music is almost exclusively electronic in nature, however, since 2003 she has incorporated orchestration and classical instruments into her work for installation pieces, film soundtracks and theatre. Mira has been commissioned to write pieces for the London Sinfonietta, the Aldeburgh Festival, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Opera North and The Manchester International Festival amongst others. She has recently been nominated for the British Composer Awards for 'My Secret Heart', a commission by Streetwise Opera and has been awarded a 'Grant For The Arts' by the The Arts Council Of England, to develop her skills in orchestration in collaboration with composers; Tansy Davies and Larry Goves. http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19436 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19436 Mon, 01 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Charlie Alex March - Home/Hidden - Lo Recordings (LO79) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19446 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19446 Mon, 01 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Faz-L - 1.0 - Invitro Records (Invitro006) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19543 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19543 Mon, 01 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Syntaks - Mistral Moon EP - Ghostly International (GI95) n/a http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19550 whatpeopleplay.com, people@whatpeopleplay.com http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/albumdetails/null/id/19550 Mon, 01 Feb 2010 00:00:00 +0100 Four Tet - There Is Love In You - Domino Recording Co (WIG254D) The year is still young and Four Tet already delivers one contender for the Album of the Year Charts.
