The songs showcase grit-studded swagger and yes: in that, there’s tons of Detroit. Idle sass, like the references to dead kittens and Joy Road, means not everyone’s going to get it- although some will definitely try. But Fake Gold Chain just isn’t as frenetic as those genres most likely to draw comparisons. It’s not giddy- it’s frugal and focused. Haunted keyboards are buoyed by the thick bounce of a beat, and FGC doesn’t sprinkle in too much more. The resulting album possesses a spectral effect, putting songs like ‘Hood Plants’ and its leaky faucet demeanor on the more minimal end while Monica Blaire’s rusty harmonies sit defiantly at the opposite pole with ‘Raspberries.’ Another Detroit staple, Nick Speed, adds a welcome club tinge to ‘On Deck’, an arcade-booty anthem that is sure to be heard blaring out of Belle Isle-cruising Cutlass Supremes and sweaty after hours alike.
