Following their celebrated “Meat is Murder” EP, Meat, aka Carsten Schuchmann, teams up with Get Physical regular Einzelkind, Arno Völker and Migual Ayala, for “Words from the Frontline” - another EP fresh and full of ideas, which explores the possibilities of dancefloor-oriented minimal house and techno with a sense of fun and discovery. Carsten is the owner of Frankfurt´s respected record store Freebase, where Arno used to work; the musical understanding they developed when working together is evident in the sense of purpose and loving attention to detail on the three tracks which comprise Words from the Frontline. The EP opens with its title-track, Words from the Frontline. Indeed, the word “frontline” is appropriate - the firm kickdrum sets the tone and pace before a hi-hat tattoo reminiscent of a military march (a military march of the future, that is!) asserts itself. Rushing synth effects edge in from the sides before the track expands to accomodate a bending, feintly jazzy keyboard motif. This is quickly absorbed into the track`s fierce, linear 4x4 progression, and the addition of crisp snap-claps make this a winning modern take on 2nd wave Detroit-style techno. The huge builds and subtle drops means “Words from the Frontline” is sure to be lapped up by the dancefloor, while the sheer quality of the production should ensure its appeal is long-lasting. B1 “Hear the Man” is similarly. It opens with an extended vocal sample of malcom x talking about revolution, while 80s influenced keys weigh in before mutating into a simply, unmistakeably ravery. A deep, tracking bassline swells up from beneath, while an urgent kickdrum, super-tight snares and an array of bleeps and percussion keep time. A one-note piano is intermittently punched-out, creating hair raising tension on the dancefloor. This is a direct and fresh club track which will doubtless become a DJ`s favourite. The EP closes with “Ready for This”, which initially takes its cue from the Chilean sound - intricate, almost tribal percussion cradling the unwavering 4x4 pulse. “Ready for This” is a remarkable production, one which showcases Meat and Einzelkind`s talents as musicians as well as dancefloor producers. Expect this one to find its way into the sets of the most discerning DJs out there. All in all, “Words from the Frontline” lives up to its title – it`s a broadcast from the cutting edge of house and techno; it`s no-nonsense, and it´s ready to do battle on the dancefloor.
