Kalahari Oyster Cult comes up with Hame DJs four tracker Sandtrax which actually doesn’t really sound as dry as the name suggests. On Sandtrax Hame DJ (who debuted with the still remarkable Dog Swamp on Vulcan Venti two years ago) stirs together a juicy mix of big beats, 90s rave screamadelica, jungle fever, 303s and spheric electronics, delivering a wild ride that’s, there’s no point in denying, definitely worth your money. The first track, On 1, starts this ride with an extremely punchy groove and a rave chord that even echoes early The Prodigy (when they were good, long time ago), making clear that Hame DJs mission is not founded on the doctrine of minimalism. Zoot also heads into the ravey direction, breakbeats, rave horns, Hame DJ goes all the way. Yet he doesn't overdo it, no cheap thrills, this is serious.
For the last two tracks the tempo slows down a little while the tension maybe even increases. Nightlife might be the EPs highlight: the beats are still heavy but upon them, synth cascades and soft piano chords unfold that make you feel the warmth of a sunrise over the dunes of Tatooine. Amazing. Erosion then comes with teeth, sharpened acid noises circulate over a brittle hip hop groove.
All in all, this is quite a spectacular EP, good work by Hame DJ and Kalahari Oyster Cult. There’s more to come, I’m sure. (Written by João Geck)
