Often citing her love for horror films and soundtracks, Mexican DJ and producer Yoan Rodriguez, aka Lokier, writes tracks like scenes. Following a release on British label Days of Being Wild and a remix with Morgan Hammer as She Made Monster for Iñigo Vontier, Yoan arrives to HAKT with Gate Masters, a heavy EP of uncanny dancefloor bombs for those of us with left-leaning ears. The ambience and groove of the EP’s three original tracks are inseparable. Kicks, snares, and basslines drop to incite mood as much as movement. When opener “Blind Flow” sets off, it’s hard to believe that the odd whirligig melody will develop into a whopping current of elliptical surrealism a-la Terrence Dixon. Yet with a few shifts, additions, and a disciplined approach to track building, we’re brought there without even realizing. The title track follows with a rippled bassline and high-pitched Suspiria synths that turn a dark piece of club functionality into a retro fever-dream. Lastly, “Hel’s Reaction” begins with a classically spooky synth arpeggio and mounts to a macabre big-room stomper. As a bonus, London-based producer South London Ordnance replaces some spook with extra thump for a beefy remix of the title track. While darkness and dankness may be very “in” right now, few producers work the mood with that right mix of mischief and subtle camp. Hearing Lokier aloud instills the proper sense of deviant fear that any dance music (or horror film!) should aspire to.
