It’s fairly safe to say Pezzner has injected a breath of fresh air into dance music since he released his debut EP on Freerange in 2008. US label OM quickly showed an interest in his original material, as did a whole load of other labels wanting the Pezzner touch on remixes including Ovum, Ghostly International, Neurotrax and Room With A View. The Seattle based producer is prolific to say the least so when we suggested he produce his debut LP for Freerange we knew things would come together fairly quickly, and here it is……. The Tracks Are Alive is loaded with the kind of leftfield, organic sounding house which is at once club orientated but with enough interest and depth to keep the home listener totally absorbed. Pezzner has a very unique sound and isn’t afraid to push things in a fairly abstract direction sonically. Obviously having 80 minutes to play with is something he’s embraced wholeheartedly so for anyone who enjoys the wholesome, intricate House of say Stimming mixed with Buriel’s blissed out electronica we’re sure you’ll dig this. From the off-kilter disco-imbued funk of Three Out Of Five things take a turn left into deeper waters with a vocal track entitled Find Me featuring Larissa Kapp. The sustained guitars add a ‘pop’ touch to the sound while the layers of live horns add texture and dynamics to the arrangement. Chiuso Per Ferie is up next picking up the pace with a very loopy, almost jacking vibe that contrasts with the modulating Theremin lines and striking chord sections. Things toughen up further on The Tracks Are Alive complete with heads down, no nonsense shuffling groove and White Horse-esque synths. This one’s got funk by the bucket load. On we head through the beautiful Reich inspired minimalism and ambience of Philip Part 2 and Drones and into Dewolfe for more sublime cut-up sampledelia over an understated groove. Blacklist keeps the vibe rolling with a lovely deep and hypnotic feel complete with ghostly pitched down vocal and incredible textural detail adding to the haunting atmosphere whilst Almost Here is Pezzner in his element, locking down a stripped, loopy and refined beat while expertly manipulated and effected choir samples ebb and flow. As things wind down, Hunt And Gather calms the mood further with its delicate groove, gentle moog lines and strangely mechanical xylophone parts and solo. To finish you must simply bathe in the valiant beauty of Last Call. Those who like and support the LP can look forward to 2 supporting singles including brand new remixes from Stimming, Ryo Murakami, Lusine, Justin Martin, Jay Shepheard, Matt Masters and Kodack.
