Release #56 and we welcome super NYC duo Walker & Royce with their debut full release for Pets Recordings. Sam Walker and Gavin Royce first blew up as new talent over two years ago, with the press focusing on their deep and bubbly brand of smooth and emotional house music. Fast-forward to now, the duo’s been on fire, releasing on labels such as Moda Black, Sincopat and Crosstown Rebels. Now, after remixing BAUNZ’s Out Of The Window, it’s high time they focused on an EP all of their own for the Pets pound.
But, forget what you know about this perky big city outfit. On My Stop, W&R have left behind their more whimsical, introverted style for a balls-to-the-wall club smash. My Stop comes to life from the get go with a thudding kick drum, resonating thickly with maximum echoes before a techy, fluctuating melody drives the track through skipping percussion, miss-hit beats and radiating shots of sub bass- it amounts to the deep nature of their usual sound making babies with dub techno, packed with swing and groove in equal, unabashed measure. The listener is “about to get off” without a shadow of a doubt.
‘Seventeen’ brings more bass heavy dubbiness into a chugging, dropping techno workout, following a hypnotic path as vocal chops are bent, smashed and distorted out of shape as cheeky, clipped basslines add more fist pumping quality to the track.
On the evidence of My Stop, its easy to see why the pair – with their European flavours and influences – broke out of the local Brooklyn scene to make an impact on the world’s dancefloors and charts. Tip your hat to these fine fellows – you’re sure to be hearing lots from the for some time to come.
