Rick Wilhite was born on the West side of Detroit in the early 70’s. He grew up near the famous Outer Drive, where artists like Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin as well as Berry Gordy used to reside. Young Rick was exposed to all types of music at an early age, listening to the radio and visiting backyard and basement parties. He started dj’ing in his parent’s house around 1979. The basement was big enough to roller skate in, so his friends would come round and while they skated, Rick would play records. He started to deliver papers in order to buy new records every week. By the time he went to middle school his self-taught dj skills were good enough to win a talent show, where he rocked the house behind the turntables. Rick got more involved with the record industry when he got a job at the legendary Buy Rite Record store in 1984. The store owner, Cliff Thomas, is also known for running popular labels at the time like Express and Incognito Records. These labels released early recordings of artists like Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. Rick became popular with the dj’s at the time as he was handing them the best import, hip hop and house records from behind the counter. Rick started producing music in 1986 with a rap artist named Sir Bob under the name Tech 12 and later went on to produce his first house record with Urban Tribe’s Sherard Ingram and Juan Atkins under NASA 1986. After having learned the basics from Juan Atkins and Blake Baxter, Rick went on to produce his solo material under his own name and the first EP was released on Moodyman’s KDJ label in 1996, the now classic Soul Edge EP. A year later he followed this up with The Godson EP (also on KDJ), a name he also uses as an alias. He chose that name because “although I am involved in this music thing for a long long time, I am not old enough to be called the Godfather of the Detroit music scene”. By that time he had also formed Thee Chairs, together with his friends Moodymann and Theo Parrish (later Marcellus Pittman joined in as well). Under this name they played records together and organized parties together. They also released music together and their releases on KDJ as well as the Three Chairs label remain classics to this day. In 1999 Rick opened his store Vibes NewandRareMusic. This was his third record store, which he ran solo until he brought Marcellus Pittman in to work there along with a few other Detroit locals. Vibes represents the love for music and friends as well as serious record buying and dj’s around the world. The store temporarily closed down last year, but Rick is working on reopening it soon. The Vibes compilation was the one way Rick could express all the great music from the local music scene and store customers and shows that the Detroit music scene is still vibrant.
