Reviews: Monikca, Carlos Nilmmns, Deadbeat

Deep Tech House recommended

Monikca – Münchner Jazz Bar (Big Bait Records)

A pack of powerful and jazzy deep house stumblers is brought to us by the first release of hitherto undiscovered Bavarian duo Monikca. Their debut called “Münchner Jazz Bar” EP on Big Bait Records combines a modern approach to house and organically swinging vibes through its strong jazz influences, which the duo performed and recorded on their own since they are skilled in classical piano and jazz drums. While “Want No Other” is a synthie driven deep house uplift with a dance supportive chord flow and plain groove, the title track “Münchner Jazz Bar” works out a crowded nights’ jazz bar theme that reminds on the good old “Take Five” and brings tricky rhythms and a jam feel to the house floor. Last but not least its label resident Chocky whos remix of “Wants No Other” brings some more luscious crispy deep house energy to this EP. Welcome cheerful summer sounds!

Various Artists – Carlos Nilmmns & Friends (Paris Metro)

Ross McMillan aka Carlos Nilmmns is the protagonist of this fine selection of complex deepness called “Carlos Nilmmns & Friends” on Paris Metro Music. After quite some output on labels like Ornaments, 4 Lux Black, Skylax or Circus Company this compilation presents a little overview of remixes and co-operations that the Scottish producer who is now located in France did over the past years. Pleasantly musical is his works, multilayered and dense with swelling arrangements, bumpy drums and influences in Detroit deepness and Chicago acid house as well as orchestral elements and some theatrical tendencies. Great!

Deadbeat – The Jacks EP (Visionquest)

Another round of dub-infected bangers got delivered by Deadbeat with his “The Jacks EP” on Visionquest. The Canadian producer, who should be well-known for his quality output between dope beats and floor stompers for nearly two decades now on labels like scape, Wagon Repair, Echochord or BLKRTZ put the sweaty floors into focus again. Starting with two heavyweight jungle tech rhythm reductions including trippy background sound motion and ending with a decelerated acid groove affair that slowly grows and declines for morning dancer’s pleasure this EP brings along some top-notch floor content. Heavy stuff!
